2020 off to a Roaring Start
Print was a big deal in the 20’s of centuries past and it looks to be off to a great start this time around as well. We’re obviously a bit biased, but let's look at the evidence: #BPWmembers are starting the decade with gusto. Here’s a quick quick round up of achievements so far and ones in the pipeline:
Long time member, Ivan Armstrong opened a solo exhibition in the Garden of Reflection Gallery, Derry on January 27th. Titled ‘The Last Tree in Ireland’, this beautiful series of photo-etchings looked at the changing landscape and view of the west of Ireland.
Although this one opened in 2019, Jonathan Brennan has been showing in Engage Art Studios, Galway as part of the Winter Papers Exhibition alongside artist Suzanne Walsh. It’s closing this week, February 14th.
As part of the NI Science Festival, Dr Josephine McCormick presents 'The Frequency of Things' at Artcetera Art Gallery. Opening Thursday 13th February and running until Saturday 22nd February, the body of work explores and rethinks ‘The Frequency of Things’ in relation to the impact of ‘The Internet of Things’ (IoT). She is also leading a workshop on capturing frequencies on Saturday 15 February.
BPW Studio Technician Raquel Amat Parra, will present a solo show at Ards Arts Centre, Newtownards Feb 27th - March 25th. ‘Under the Phoenix Eye’ featuring work created during her 6 week residency at Guanlan Printmaking Base, China during summer 2019. Exhibition opens Thursday 27th and there’ll be an artist talk on Saturday 29th.
Over at An Cultúrlann, in west Belfast Karen Daye-Hutchinson will show ‘Mapping’ an exhibition featuring a collection of large hand drawn maps, correlating imagery and symbolism from a childhood journey through Belfast, expressed through various print processing including etching, monoprint and artist books. Exhibition runs from Feb 27th - March 27th and previews March 5th.
We’ve not got exact details yet, but we also know there’s going to be solo shows from Maura Lynch and Linda McBurney on the horizon this year.
We have our NI Print Symposium, Multi Matrix on March 13th as well as BPW group shows in Down Arts Center (May) and Sea Holly Gallery, Belfast (September), so watch this space for more details.
If that’s not a flying start to the year, we don’t know what is!
