Archive Assitant

We are looking for an Archive Assistant to work with our curator to develop our archived collection of print art. This is a job for someone who is interested in art history or art research, comfortable with digital work, meta tagging, andhandling data in various formats.

This is a part-time, currently for a limited period, and is very suitable for post-graduate students.

BPW is a charitable company limited by guarantee, established in 1977 to welcome artists interested in the practice and promotion of the art of printmaking. The Belfast Print Workshop Archive is a vibrant collection of fine art prints from artists who were working Belfast in the 1970's right up to the present day - a wide range of techniques and styles are represented in the rich collection of over 1000 prints. The archive is partly digitised, this was done to allow for this significant collection to be accessed and shared more widely. This role was created to assist in continuing the work, organise the artwork both physically and digitally, and develop the collection’s accessibility to its fullest potential.

Tenders Invited:

Archive Assistant: Reporting to the Curator & Board of Trustees.

Part-time *Freelance 8 to 16 hours/week (flexibility required) at £10/hour.


This role is on a contract basis, currently for 120 hours, more hours and an extension of the contract may become available, depending on funding.

  • No art-specific experience is required, but demonstrating an interest in art history or art research is an advantage. This role is an exciting opportunity for the right person to gain access to a wonderful cultural resource and develop it.

  • This is a role for someone who is very comfortable with digital files, including handling image files with online tools as well as Adobe. Experience with social media, tagging, and building and maintaining large spreadsheets is essential.

  • Fast learner of new technologies.

  • Basic understanding of filing systems and tidiness is also really important, you will be working with large amounts of information. Extreme attention to detail is key.

  • Since you will be working remotely with the curator of a busy organisation, you will have to be a good communicator and comfortable with various channels of online communication.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Digital data creation including meta tags and photos

  2. Digital file handling

  3. Assisting in research of similar archives 

  4. Assisting in developing solutions for digital and physical accessibility and storage

  5. Other archive-related duties assigned by the curator
