James is the current Chair of the Belfast Print Workshop and has been a member since 1977.

James Allen was born in Lurgan, County Armagh. He studied at Belfast College of Art from 1961 – 1965 and at Brighton College of Art from 1965 – 1967. Teaching positions at Goldsmiths School of Art, London (1967 – 1970) and Ravensbourne College of Art, London (1973 – 76) followed. Although principally a printmaker, he is also an accomplished painter. Collections include the Arts Council of Great Britain, Armagh County Museum, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, An Chomhairle Ealaion – Dublin, Lloyds Bank, Northern Bank, National Self-Portrait Collection – Limerick University, Office of Public Works – Dublin, Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster Television and the Ulster Museum. Allen was elected Associate Academician of the RUA in 1980 and elevated to Academician in 1983.
