Raquel Amat off to Guanlan Printmaking Base, China
Guanlan Original Printmaking Base is located in the hometown of the famous printmaker Chen Yanqiao, pioneer of Chinese New Woodcut Movement as well as a renowned art theorist and educator. It’s fantastic workshop facilities and residency program attracts artists and printmakers from across the globe.
Raquel was invited to visit as an artist in residence after her print ‘Awaiting’ (Mokulito, pictured above) was purchased for the permanent collection of the China Printmaking Museum in 2018. Her travels are supported by a SIAP grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Residencies provide the opportunity for artists to have a designated time and space to develop new work and Raquel intends to use this opportunity to continue her research into interdisciplinary printmaking focused on lithographic techniques (including mokulito) alongside other printmaking methods.
Raquel said; ‘I’m excited and a bit nervous. This has been a dream of mine for a long time but never thought they would actually approach me! Some of the lecturers from my MA in Poland have been before and highly recommended it. It is a wonderful place for focused research on printing and has incredible facilities and assistance.'
We’re delighted that one of our artists has been awarded this opportunity to develop their practice and build their network internationally. We hope she’ll bring a few business cards for us and can’t wait to find out to see what new things she learns and creates when she gets back!
*Ps - Don’t panic BPW members, Raquel’s last day is June 25th. Her regular hours Monday - Thursday 9.30 - 6pm, will be covered by our wonderful casual Technician Dónall Billings until she’s back to work August 21st.
