How can a piece have such little information and yet be so interesting? The simplicity of the composition of figurative work in Shawcross’s collograph caught my eye. The choice of colour and graphic marks are very attractive and full of energy. There is a beautiful movement of the figure that seems to be turning around, running away or dancing. I love the strong black that he has achieved by applying coarse carborundum grit to the plate to hold more ink and create deeper tones of colour.
