Belfast's very own Peter Wilson, known to the world as Duke Special, is a man of boundless curiosity. His artistic exploration knows no bounds, encompassing music, theatre, literature, poetry, visual art, love, life, redemption, death, and even the enchanting world of 78RPM records. This insatiable curiosity has fueled a career marked by a diverse array of musical adventures, and on the evening of Friday, 15th September 2023, at 7:30 pm, you have the exclusive opportunity to delve into the enchanting realm of Duke Special at the Belfast Print Workshop.

With a remarkable portfolio boasting 16 albums and EPs, Duke Special's musical journey has taken him to all corners of the globe. His artistic vision has extended far beyond the confines of traditional music, touching upon theatre, literature, and the visual arts. Notably, Duke Special composed the music for Deborah Warner's lauded 2009 production of "Mother Courage and Her Children" at London's National Theatre. Additionally, he was commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to craft a series of original songs inspired by the works of pioneering photographers Stieglitz, Steichen, and Strand. This demonstrates his profound ability to translate visual art into soul-stirring melodies.

 
 

Duke Special in Theatre

In the world of theatre, Duke Special's creative genius has shone brightly. Collaborating with Andrew Doyle, he composed music for four captivating productions: "Gulliver's Travels" (BYMT, 2015), "Paperboy" (BYMT, 2017), "Huckleberry Finn" (Lyric Theatre, Belfast, 2018), and "Breadboy" (BYMT 2022). Additionally, in partnership with Bob Kelly, he contributed to the enthralling "Breakfast on Pluto" (Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival, in development).

Adventures in Belfast and Ireland: A Celebration of 21 Years

In 2023, Duke Special embarks on a series of live shows - "Adventures in Belfast" and "Adventures in Ireland" - to commemorate the release of his very first EP 21 years ago. These shows will be a magnificent showcase of songs from his illustrious career, and he will be joined by his long-time collaborator and kindred spirit, the tintinnabulator, Temperance Society Chip Bailey.

While Duke Special's artistic journey spans various mediums, his heart still beats for live performances. Over the years, he has enraptured audiences worldwide, whether performing solo, as a duo, with a full band, a string quartet, or an orchestra.
